Teaching Foundations is one of the four core modules of the TTC programme and provides a comprehensive overview of the essential knowledge required for teachers of English as a Foreign Language. The module revisits key theoretical and practical concepts that underpin effective classroom practice.
Delivered over one academic semester, with sessions typically ranging from 1.5 to 3 hours, the module combines synchronous classes via Google Meet with guided readings and complementary tasks hosted on Google Classroom.
Scope of the module
- Core concepts in language teaching and learning
- Principles of lesson planning and staging
- Teacher Talking Time (TTT) and classroom interaction
- Approaches to error correction and feedback
- The relationship between language systems, skills, and methodology
- Theoretical foundations that inform classroom decisions
Rather than prescribing a single methodology, Teaching Foundations promotes reflective and critical practice, encouraging participants to understand why certain strategies work and how to adapt them to different teaching contexts.
Outcomes
By the end of the module, participants will be able to:
- Demonstrate a clearer understanding of key concepts in EFL teaching
- Make informed pedagogical decisions grounded in theory
- Critically evaluate their own teaching beliefs and practices
- Strengthen their ability to plan purposeful, coherent lessons
- Articulate their understanding of the teaching–learning process in alignment with recognised and innovative approaches.
Teaching Foundations equips teachers, whether pre-service or experienced, with a solid theoretical base to support confident, reflective, and forward-thinking professional practice.
